Things To Do

Massacre Rocks State Park
Twelve miles west of American Falls is a must-see geological and historical site. An exhibit at the Visitor’s Center tells the story of this natural travel corridor. Oregon Trail ruts can still be seen as well as the results of a lava flow that dammed the Snake River over 100,000 years ago. The beautiful campground offers evening campfire programs.
Craters of the Moon
Just south of Arco, Idaho, about 86 miles northwest of Pocatello, is 83 square miles of unique volcanic formations - an eerie domain that early pioneers made a superstitious point to avoid. Drive the seven mile loop road through the monument and discover spatter and cider cones, lava flows and lava tube ‘caves.’ Several hiking trails are available, and a short guided tour is offered by the Visitor’s Center.
Yellowstone National Park
America’s oldest and largest National Park is located 168 miles northeast of Pocatello. Yellowstone National Park encompasses 2.2 million acres of scenic beauty. Accommodations in the park are open May through October and December through March. For park information, contact Yellowstone National Park. (307) 344-7381
Grand Teton National Park
Ten mountain summits tower more than a vertical mile above the flat valley floor. Canoe rentals, float trips and scenic walks are all offered at the park, located near Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Ross Park Zoo
Ross Park Zoo has a unique collection of native North American wildlife species in a natural setting that is the envy of many larger zoos throughout the country. Here, visitors can see mountain goats, cougar, grizzly bears, coyotes, red fox, deer, elk, bison, bobcat and many other animals. Zoo hours are 10 a.m. to dusk from April through August and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. September through March.
The Idaho Museum of Natural History
The museum has a permanent exhibit on The Nature of Idaho inviting visitors to walk down a trail of the past. Fossils such as the great bison latifrons and sabertooth cat illustrate the diversity of life forms in Idaho during prehistoric times. A discovery room for children invites exploration of mammoth fossils and youngsters can grind grain on stones with ancient tools of Paleo Indians. The museum is located on the ISU campus. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
The Oregon Trail and Old Fort Hall Site
Long hidden out of view by buffalo grass, the original site of the Old Fort Hall on the Oregon Trail (on the Shoshone-Bannock Indian Reservation just outside of Pocatello) is now open for viewing. Visitors can view the site in the Fort Hall “bottoms” near the bank of the Snake River, or they can contact Tribal Historic Trails Manager “Red” Perry to get an escorted tour of the many Oregon Trail sites around Pocatello. Perry, a life-long resident of the area and son of a trapper, brings the sites to life and regales visitors with stories of trappers, pioneers, Native Americans and their history. For more information, contact Robert “Red” Perry at 238-0097, or call the Chamber of Commerce at 233-1525.
The Pocatello Art Center
401 1/2 N. Main. The Center promotes the visual arts offering workshops and classes to the public, encouraging developing artists and providing a free place to work and a gallery for artists and students to exhibit their original art work for the public to enjoy. The Art Center sponsors an annual summer art festival at the end of July, the “Open-Air Art Fair,” featuring hand-crafted art works created by local artists. You can contact the Pocatello Art Center by calling 232-0970.
